  1. To start, to relax, you will be given an intravenous medication. Then you will lay on your stomach on an x-ray table.
  2. The doctor will then use a local anesthetic to numb an area on your back.

Then, while using your x-ray as a guide the doctor will:

  1. Inject an anesthetic near your spine using a thin needle.
  2. Insert another needle to mirror the first needle, using your spine as the axis.
  3. Inject dye to be certain the medication is being directed to the correct location.
  4. Finally, inject a pain medication such as steroid, clonidine, or epinephrine.

You do not need to have a long hospital stay. You leave the very day you came and the procedure normally doesn’t take any longer than 30 minutes.
