Celiac Plexus Block

Chronic abdominal pain can disrupt your life and be excruciatingly painful. Sometimes the pain can be dulled and numbed through medications prescribed by a doctor, if pain still persists, your pain doctor may recommend other treatments. In some cases, if the pain is extremely severe, a doctor may recommend a Celiac Plexus Block. This is an injection of strong pain medication; the length of time of its effect is undetermined, because it’s different for each person taking the procedure.

  1. To start, to relax, you will be given an intravenous medication. Then you will lay on your stomach on an x-ray table.
  2. The doctor will then use a local anesthetic to numb an area on your back.

Then, while using your x-ray as a guide the doctor will:

  1. Inject an anesthetic near your spine using a thin needle.
  2. Insert another needle to mirror the first needle, using your spine as the axis.
  3. Inject dye to be certain the medication is being directed to the correct location.
  4. Finally, inject a pain medication such as steroid, clonidine, or epinephrine.

You do not need to have a long hospital stay. You leave the very day you came and the procedure normally doesn’t take any longer than 30 minutes.

Risks of the Celiac Plexus Block

There is a very low risk of any kind of complication; if there are any complications, there could be bruising or soreness around the area of the injection. There are very rarely any serious complications such as infections, nerve damage, bleeding, or collapsed lung. Some side effects of the injection may be the following:
