What Are Migraine Headaches?

Migraine headaches are the most common group of severe primary headaches. Statistics says that more than 37 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines, with 91% of the survey population missing work or experiencing a decrease in normal functioning during a migraine attack.

A migraine attack is a spontaneous, distressing neurological condition characterized by:

  • A throbbing sensation on the head (usually on one side)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hypersensitivity to light
  • Increased sensitivity to sound
  • A headache made worse by movement

Most of the time, migraines are preceded by an “aura”, which serves as a warning sign based on the spreading wave of increased brain activity, followed by a period of diminished brain activity.

Other manifestations of an aura include:

  • Visual disturbances such as moving lights, tunnel vision
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Numbness
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Tingling sensations
  • Odd scents

    Managing Headache and Migraine Pain

John Green, an international best-selling author, said in one of his books: “That’s the thing about pain…it demands to be felt.” Indeed, pain is a part of human life. One can try ignoring the pain, but sometimes, like a metal spring pressed down on a table, no matter how long you try to hold it down, the pain will go right back up. Green, in his proverbial statement, has also depicted what it is like to have a migraine.

There are more than 3 million reported cases of headache or migraine pain each year. 3 million cases! And that’s just the people who go to the doctor for treatment. How many are out there trying to unsuccessfully self-medicate and continue to suffer alone? Sound like you?
