Ongoing Sports Injury Pain

Ongoing Sports Injury Pain

Anyone can be injured from playing sports, and sports injuries can hinder a player’s ability to continue at the same athletic level; if at all. It is very important to get the proper treatment to a sports injury, otherwise your injury may very well be the last memory of your athletic career. Below are the most common areas of injury in sports and how they can be treated.

ANKLE SPRAIN PAIN

Ankle sprains are the most common injuries in sports or even in everyday lives. A sprained ankle happens when the ligaments (tough tissue that holds your bones together) in your ankle are stretched too far or completely snapped. A sprained ankle can result from simply twisting your ankle too suddenly. The severity is measured in grades; Grade I is when the ligaments are only stretched, Grade II is when the ligaments are slightly torn, and Grade III is when the ligaments are completely torn apart. To treat a Grade I or II sprained ankle, you should elevate your ankle, give it lots of rest, reduce swelling with an ice pack, take anti-inflammatory painkillers, compress your ankle with elastic bandages, and use an ankle brace if needed. Even a Grade III sprained ankle can possibly heal on its own through the treatment previously mentioned, but in very rare cases it may require surgery. If you are suffering from sprained ankle pain contact Pegasus pain management.

KNEE INJURY PAIN

The most common knee injury is an ACL tear. One’s ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is located behind the knee. It attaches the thigh bone to the shin bone through the back of the knee and can be torn in many different ways, such as: jumping and landing while your knee is flexed, twisting your knee while your foot is fixed in place, or extending your knee too far. This sort of injury normally leaves the sport’s player unable to participate in any sports for a long period of time and possibly forever. An ACL tear could easily spell out the end of a sports career, it must be treated as soon as possible. If the tear was a minor tear, then the injury may heal on its own given the proper treatment and time. You should rest your knee (elevate your knee), avoid putting any weight on your knee, cool knee with an ice pack to stop the swelling, and take anti-inflammatory painkillers. If the injury is more major, and causing ongoing pain, then you should contact Pegasus pain management to see what kind of pain treatment you need to start feeling better.

SHIN SPLIT PAIN

If your shins are throbbing or aching after running or sprinting, then you may have shin splits. This is a very common injury for runners and dancers. Shin splits can be caused by swollen muscles, stress fractures (small breaks in lower leg bones), over pronation (When the impact of your step leads to the collapse of your foot’s arch), or weakness in core muscles. Shin splits normally heal on their own with proper care. To treat this injury, you can rest your body allowing time to heal, use an ice pack for swelling, use orthotics (shoe inserts) to support your arch, use a neoprene sleeve to support your leg, and go to physical therapy, if needed. In some cases, this pain is still agonizing our pain experts can help you determine what pain treatment is right for you.
